Laundry isn’t the only thing spinning in this storage-
packed utility room. So are crafts and creativity.

As an on-the-go mom, Beth
Nelson keeps an eye on the
clock. Having to rummage
through a closet for wrapping
paper or move her kids’ craft
projects off the dinner table
were little setbacks to staying
on track. So during a
remodeling of her
1952
Southern California home,
Beth centralized household
odds and ends in a new
laundry room. “It’s a
workhorse; I can multitask so
many things in it,” she says.
“My days are much more
productive now”
CHEER LEADER
With yellow cabinetry, a
mosaic-tile backsplash, and
display space for pottery, the
room is a bright spot. “Why
not have happy?” Beth says.
“Chores seem less like chores”
MEASURING UP
Beth took measurements for
cabinets and drawers right
down to jugs of detergent and
rolls of wrapping paper. “ I had
one shot to do this right,” she
says. A big island for folding
clothes, wrapping gifts, potting
plants, and crafting is the hub.
PRACTICAL MATTERS
Slate countertops resist
scratches, and the wood floor
has a distressed paint finish
that camouflages dirt.
